If you have a soil's report that classifies the soil as type A, B or C per OSHA/WISHA for purposes of temporary cuts, this document might be a helpful aid:

It provides some great clarifying pictures that may have been (partially) verbally translated into the soil's report. A picture is worth a thousand words.
