ACI/IBC/SBC - Wall Pier Design

Hi all,

I noticed that there are some changes/modifications to the codes that I was not aware of:

1.    ACI [21.9.8] Talks about Wall piers and their design

2.    IBC [1905.1.4] Talks about deleting ACI [21.9.8] and replacing with text per the IBC

3.    SBC deletes IBC[1905.1.4] leaving the original ACI [21.9.8] unchanged.

That is news and FYI (in case you may be late to the party – like me…)

Below is the SBC spec - which deletes the IBC changes to the ACI - leaving the ACI unchanged

	Additionally and interestingly,,, the WAC does weigh in on the Wall pier Design issue. It disregards it and rejects it out of hand. It does not recognize the definition of wall pier nor the treatment of Wall pier design.... Interesting?

Columns in access aisle at handicap stalls

Just checking in about others experience here. We are being asked to move a concrete column (ends up being two) because it is located inside the access aisle of a handicap parking spot. I'm told by the guys at Caron, that the local and building codes don't necessarily have anything against this, but the federal standards apparently dictate otherwise. I'm told that the ANSI/FHA/ADAS requirements are more restrictive than the local codes and we need to comply.





Andy sent me an email with some code references, but it does not seem to tell me the same thing..? In fact he points out that this might sail right past the city permitting and inspectors, but could pose a future legal risk for failure to comply with federal regulations.

Here are some examples that I sent over to him to review from recent projects that we have done - all showing a column on the parking stripe or right next to it... I'm left trying to figure out why we're needing to move this column, and how come the "federal" rules override local jurisdictional requirements? Anyone have any clues... This may be coming to a cinema near you...
